A peacock #mantisshrimp surveys the #reef from the opening in his burrow. These large members of the family are expert predators in the shallow reef systems they inhabit. The peacock mantis shrimp is from the class known as smashers. They have large club-like appendages which they use to smash their prey, ambushing them from their burrows in the substrate. They can strike at over 50 miles an hour and can even break the glass in aquarium tanks. Normally found across the Indo-Pacific this species of mantis shrimp is one of the largest and most colorful. Where do you spend most of your money while travelling? I spend more on food. When I saw the mantis shrimps that bigger than my face at the night market of phu quoc, I stopped and ordered as my dinner. And of course half of my pocket money has gone. #phuquoc#phuquocisland
How's this for a #hippocampus ? I wanted the hooves to be functional and to make a more practical looking animal...and a #mantisshrimp was the answer! They're amazing crustaceans with hammer claws that unfold into spears. I adapted the general head shape of a seahorse and the tailfin of an . At this time I'm not sure if I'll further this idea, but I'm loving it so far!

Kagan - Saint of Mantishrim, Fist of the Sea. Saw a pirate once, loved the look, copies it dutifully. Used money won in fist fighting competitions to buy a boat. Now sails the seas with a keen eye for magical ley lines that he then maps by hand. #dumdum19#hasterpg

Happy V Day! Here’s a quick thought about the ferocity of love. F is for fight. The mantis shrimp is a fierce predator whose club-like arms move so quickly they create a shockwave that stuns or kills their prey 🙃🙃🙃. May you also fight with unimaginable force for your people and what you believe. . . . . . . #procreate#mantisshrimp
Golden mantis shrimp photographed at the Blue Heron Bridge. Only discovered in 2003, this is a relatively newly described specie. Its body is totally goldish in color including its eyes. To my knowledge and @suzan_meldonian_uw published in her book, this is the first Golden mantis to be photographed in Florida. @oceanprophotography #goldenmantis#mantisshrimp
Mantis Shrimps influenced by Max Ernst. This painting was done as a result of a bet with my husband who said he wanted a painting in the style of Max Ernst, with Mantis Shrimps in it. I said no problem. And three years later - here it is! #bristolartist#instaart
This was a tiny Mantis Shrimp about 5cm in length. I was told it is not the same as its cousin , the large Peacock Mantis Shrimp. It has relatively muted colours and tend to move about its burrow allowing for multiple shots to capture the lively independent eyes. #mantisshrimp#muckdiving
I was so blessed to capture these images of my current favorite creature of the sea. The smashing Mantis Shrimp is one of the strongest critters of the muck. Dressed in all the colors of the rainbow, it is the hardest hitting, ounce for ounce boxer in the world! Its two front arms are shaped like clubs that rest upon a saddle-shaped exoskeleton that functions like a loaded spring, enabling the mantis shrimp to hit as fast as a 22 caliber bullet! That’s equivalent to 50mph in 3 milliseconds and 200lbs of force! In fact, they punch so fast that ...
🦐 Scaly-Tailed Mantis Shrimp 🦐 . . Finished up my first detailed watercolor spot illustration! This is one of over 500 species of mantis shrimp that exist 😱 and this 3-4” long shrimp makes up for its size in other qualities. Each eye has bifocal vision, and 16 color-receptive cones (humans have 3), and their long front appendages can strike so fast and with so much force that the released energy creates bursts of light in the water!!! They can also break the glass in your fish tank with one punch, so not sure if they’d be a great pet. ...
