What better fragrance to celebrate #worldchocolateday?
Like experimental chefs, perfumers @oliviercresp and Yves de Chiris served up a scent that was unapologetically sweet and rich - with blackcurrant, caramel, chocolate and vanilla.
Their culinary adventure was based on Thierry Mugler’s idea that his fragrance should smell of childhood treats – candied apple, chocolate, cotton candy.
Angel launched to mixed reception in 1992.
38 years later it is an unmatched classic, the symbol of an era, and a widely referenced case study in perfume creation and marketing.
Credited as the first ‘oriental gourmand’ because of its unusual foodie components, it made it to the #FiFiAwards Hall of Fame in 2007. Angel has inspired hundreds, if not thousands of perfume creations and began an entire genre in the perfume industry.

MORE ABOUT ANGEL
“... a mega dose of ethyl maltol – that famous cotton candy note now everpresent in female commercial perfumes. The fruit note of blackcurrant [neocaspiren] the pride and joy of @givaudan was inspired by the sweet, dark Crème de cassis liqueur from Burgundy. It became the foundation of the fruit part of the composition contrasted with the floral notes of jasmine [hedione] and the woody, masculine patchouli that harmonized and calmed the sweet, opulent top and middle notes of the perfume.” [source scentertainer.net quoting @chandlerburr • published July 2018]
